Figurative Sculptures

Brooke Rhonemus

"Animal Testing"

Air-dry clay, wood, paint, colored ink.
 Left sculpture 4" x 4". Right sculpture 4" x 4".

I wanted to show the animal cruelty that takes place with animal testing in labs. I included a scientist in a lab coat along with a rabbit placed inside a cage. I put blood on the scientist and as well on the pedestal that she rests on to symbolize all the bloodshed with animal testing over the years. The bunny is supposed to be in rough shape to represent the gruesome mistreatment of animals. I included a clipboard to show that scientists perform various harmful tests on these animals just to gather research information. I wanted to bring more attention to the negative implications of animal testing through my sculptures.

"A visual response to the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka."
White Copy Paper, Colored Ink (No Adhesives Material)
     Largest sculpture measures 8" x 6" x 3"

From reading this story we had to design Gregor's room based on how we interpreted it ourselves. I wanted to make the room look dreary and depressing, just as it is described in the book. This is how I pictured it to look and I am happy with the end result. I chose to make Gregor a figure on the bed to show how depressed he was. I made a chair, headboard, box spring, mattress, blanket, pillows, and a nightstand with a lamp on it. Every item that I created followed the theme of dark colors and rugged edges to represent what Gregor's room looked like to me.
